Dr. William Henry Funk II (Spike), 75, of Bowling Green, died Monday, October 2, 2017, at his residence. He was the son of William Marshall and Louise Jackson Funk. He graduated from Bowling Green High School, Centre College, and the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. He served two years in the U.S. Army Dental Corps as a Captain. He then returned to Bowling Green and established his dental practice in 1970.

He attended the Pankey Institute of Advanced Dental Studies and taught courses there. Spike was a member of both local and state dental societies as well as the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He was also a longtime member of the Calendar Club and State Street United Methodist Church.

As a former member of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Commission, Spike was instrumental in the reintroduction of the wild turkey to Kentucky. He was an avid sportsman who especially loved bird hunting with his dogs and introduced both old and young to fly-fishing. He was co-owner of marinas on Barren River Lake. Spike was a devoted conservationist who helped found the first chapter of the National Audubon Society in the area, as well as working with law enforcement officials to reduce roadside littering.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Pamela Thompson Funk, their son William Henry Funk III (Bill) and daughter Mary Mills Halpin, son-in-law Michael Halpin and grandsons Kane and Cash Halpin, as well as his sister, Betty Tee Funk Smith, brother-in-law S. Frank Smith, Jr., and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation is Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 3:00 – 7:00 PM at the Fellowship Hall of State Street United Methodist Church. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
