Robert P. Ramsey, 86, of Bowling Green, KY passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 10, at his residence. He was born on February 28, 1939 in Bowling Green, KY to Taft and Ruth Gentry Ramsey.
He was married to his lifelong sweetheart, Willanna Ramsey for 63 years until her passing in 2021. They met at Bowling Green High School in the 9th grade, were engaged as seniors, and were married in 1958. Willanna attended Western Kentucky University and graduated with a B.A. degree, majoring in math and a minor in physics and German. During that time in college, Robert's National Guard unit was activated, and he spent a year in service. They had one daughter, Anita Kay Ramsey, who also graduated from WKU with a Math, and Computer Science Major, she also preceded him in death in 2003.
Robert was an avid WKU fan, He and his wife attended all the men's and women's basketball games as well as all conference championship games. They also attended all the football games, including their bowl games. Later Robert and Willanna both became very attached to the WKU volleyball team, and volleyball became their favorite sport.
They loved going to Broadway shows in New York, Louisville, and Nashville. This led to them becoming supporters of SKYPAC in Bowling Green and later to the formation of The Ramsey Theater Company, a company formed to bring Broadway shows to the people in the Bowling Green area, so they did not have to drive to Nashville to see them.
Robert's first job was as a paperboy, and he had to be at work at 3:00 a.m. Later he joined his father in forming The Ramsey Group, Inc., a Phillips 66 distributorship that lasted 30 years. He and his wife, Willanna, formed Ramsey Mobile Home Supplies, which was a distributor of heating and air conditioning products. During this time, he obtained a HVAC master license and he done service work. They owned and operated Ramsey Mobile Home Supplies for 63 years and also formed Ramsey Rental Company, after purchasing several rental properties.
Robert and Willanna loved to travel, including every country in Europe, Japan, Australia, Hawaii, and Bangkok. Later, on the suggestion of his daughter, Anita, who has seen a store called the Container Store in Dallas. They built Container World, Inc. on the bypass and owned the business for over 30 years. Finally, after 63 years of business, his wife suggested it was time to retire.
He is survived by several cousins and his long time employee, friend and caregiver, Sharon Kissel.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 21 at Johnson Vaughn Phelps Funeral Home with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 20 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Johnson Vaughn Phelps Funeral Home and additional visitation on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of memorial contributions by suggestion of Mr. Ramsey to The Ramsey Theater Company, with the Arts of Southern Kentucky.
