Norris Eugene Shehan, age 92, of Bowling Green, KY, transitioned from this life into life eternal on Friday, June 30, 2017 at Christian Health Center.

Norris was born April 20, 1925 at the family residence in Glenwood, IA, to Henry Scott (Scotty) Shehan and Florence Eastlack Shehan. His older brother, Francis Scott, had arrived in the family December 2, 1923. Later his little sister, Carolyn Ann, joined the family on June 8, 1935.

His father was employed by the CB&Q Railroad as a Telegraph Operator and Agent. During the depression years he was transferred frequently and as a result Norris attended thirteen schools before graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School, Class of 1942, in Council Bluffs, IA.

Norris received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelor of Science Degree in General Engineering from Iowa State College, Ames, IA. He did graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in the branch of Mechanical Engineering in the states of Kentucky and Louisiana.

Norris volunteered for the U.S. Navy in the spring of 1943 at the age of seventeen, having served three years of Junior ROTC and one year of ROTC at Iowa State. He served in the South Pacific, Amphibious Craft, on LST 124, last based at Noumea, New Caledonia, a staging base for the occupation of Japan. During his active duty, he served as Commanding Officer of LST 124 and LCS 17, and was released to inactive duty August 1946. He resigned as a commissioned officer with the rank of LT (jg) in 1956.

On September 18, 1948, he married the love of his life, Jannie (Jan) Erwin at the First Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, LA. The family also lived in: Louisville, KY; Marietta, OK; Naperville, IL; Washington Island, WI and Naples, FL.

Norris was a member of: Sigma Chi Fraternity; American Legion; U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, (Coxswain, Aircraft Commander, Flight Examiner, District Air Officer); National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; Mason Lodge No. 259, Council Bluffs, IA and Lodge No. 73, Bowling Green, KY; and Rotary International. He served as President of the Naperville Rotary Club and is a Paul Harris Fellow.

He also served as: President of the Salvation Army Boys Clubs Advisory Board, Louisville, KY; Executive Vice President Salvation Army Advisory Board, Louisville, KY; twelve years as a Board Member and Chairman of the Lees Junior College Board of Trustees, Jackson, KY; President of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce; Chairman and Board Member of the Edward Hospital Board of Directors, Naperville, IL; Board Member of the Naperville Community Bank; Board Member of Harris Bank, Naperville, IL; YMCA Board of Directors, Naperville, IL; President of Biscuit and Cracker Manufacturers Association, an international association of cookie and cracker manufacturers.

He was the recipient of the Boys' Club Medallion from the Boys' Clubs of America, the Distinguished Service Award from United States Jaycees, and was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel of the staff of Governor Bert Combs in 1961.

Norris is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Scott and Florence Eastlack Shehan and a brother, Francis Scott Shehan.
He is survived by his wife, Jannie "Jan" Erwin Shehan; two children, Daniel Scott "Scotty" Shehan, Sr. (Linda) and Kathryn Jarboe (Jeff); a sister, Carolyn Ann Omundson; six grandchildren, Daniel "Scotty" Shehan, Jr (Laura), Kristen Cooper (Brandon Alexander), Jennilee Coots (Chris), Stevie Eaton (Luke), Lindsay Jarboe Hudgins (Will), and Lacee Jarboe (Andrew Young); and nine great-grandchildren with one expected soon.

A funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, July 6, 2017 at 1 PM at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 from 4 – 8 PM and again on Thursday from 10 AM until funeral time at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home.
