Obituary

Joseph Hardin McFarland, 94, of Bowling Green, passed away on Tuesday, January 14.
The Bowling Green native was born on January 30, 1931. He was preceded in death by
his wife of 65 years, Alicia Ruth Rawlins McFarland.

He was a 1949 graduate of Bowling Green High School. He received his Bachelor of
Business Administration from the University of Nebraska, Omaha and his Master of
Hospital Administration from Baylor University, Texas.

During his 28 years in the U.S. Army, he served in Korea, Fort Benning, Georgia, Fort
Sam Houston, Texas, Vietnam, two tours in Germany, and The Presidio of San
Francisco, California. He retired from the 6th Army Medical Command in 1976, as a Lt.
Col and returned to Bowling Green. Upon retirement, Joe returned to his beloved
Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and Deacon. He joined The Noon
Rotary Club where he remained an active member for 40 years. He served on the
Salvation Army board and was active in numerous organizations supporting the local
arts, Western Kentucky University, and our community's most vulnerable. He started the
Shoe and Sock donation drive for Warren Elementary and enjoyed reading to the
Kindergarten and First Grade classes regularly.

Mr. McFarland is survived by his three daughters, Jane McFarland Coverdale, of
Bowling Green, KY, Susan McFarland Liske (Greg) of Elizabethtown, KY, and Catherine
McFarland Wilson (Mike) of Bowling Green, KY; three grandchildren, Melinda Catherine
Fry (Brent) of Knoxville, TN, Mary Catherine Soister (Eric) of Bowling Green, KY,  and
Drew Allen Liske of Elizabethtown, KY; four great-grandchildren, Mason Rawlins Fry
and Lillian Grace Fry of Knoxville, TN; and Joseph Grant Soister and Laurel Ruth
Soister of Bowling Green, KY.

Funeral will be held at The Presbyterian Church on Friday, January 16, at 2:00 p.m. with
burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be at The Presbyterian Church on
Friday, January 16, beginning at 12:00 p.m.

Johnson Vaughn Phelps Funeral Home has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern
Kentucky or The Presbyterian Church of Bowling Green.
