Obituary

Dr. John S. Smith, Jr., 73, of Bowling Green passed away Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the Medical Center.

The Montgomery, AL native was a son of the late Dr. John Sam Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth Sumpter Smith House.

Dr. Smith graduated from Cumberland County High School, completed his undergraduate work at Western Kentucky University and received his MD at the University of Louisville Medical School.  He was an Army Veteran serving in the Medical Corps and worked as a physician while stationed at Fort Bragg. Dr. Smith was a pediatrician at Pediatric Associates in Bowling Green for 42 years. He was a member of South Central Fellowship Church in Bowling Green. He served on the Board of Directors with the March of Dimes and was a longtime Board member of "WCVK" Christian Family Radio.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Cook Smith; a son, Dr. Chris Smith (Charie); a daughter, Susan Smith Ross (Jason); a sister, Ann Smith Fletcher (Charles); five grandchildren, Matthew Smith, John Michael Smith, Ian Ross, Abby Ross and Sofia Ross; several beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled for 12:00 pm, Wednesday at Living Hope Baptist Church with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm Tuesday at Living Hope Baptist Church and from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Wednesday at the church. Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps is in charge of the arrangements.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Gideon's International or to the Bowling Green Pregnancy Support Center.
