Obituary

Gary Douglas Hovious, 78, of Bowling Green, KY, passed away September 17, 2017, at The Medical Center. Doug was born to Robert and Madeline Hovious on April 13, 1939, in Adair Country.
He graduated from Glasgow High School in 1957 and attended Western Kentucky University earning three degrees: Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, and Rank 1 in Education.

Doug spent 30 years as an educator in the Bowling Green City Schools. He began at Parker-Bennett Elementary where he taught science and physical education. He also coached basketball and football and was named Outstanding Young Educator by his colleagues. From Parker-Bennett he went to Bowling Green High School where he taught special education. During that time he also organized and coached Special Olympics.

Doug served his country by enlisting in the Kentucky National Guard and rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. An avid fisherman, he was a charter member of the BG Bass Club. He was also a member of Ducks Unlimited. Doug belonged to the Christian Church and attended The Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Hovious was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Gloria Young Hovious. He is survived by a brother, Robert L. Hovious (Sandra), and a sister, Judy Hovious Smith (Chuck). Doug was the beloved uncle of Gregg Hovious (Priss), Laura Lewis (Binks), Julie Faught Wade (Wesley), and Jonathan Faught (Brooke). He is also survived by brother-in-law, Aubrey D. Young (Mary Jo), Steve Young (Kim), and Dennis Young (Mary Gay), Mr. Hovious also leave behind a very special friend and traveling companion, Gretchen Bettersworth.

Visitation will be at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 19, from 4-8 pm and again on Wednesday, September 20 from 12:00 noon to service time at 2:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 20, at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial to follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, 515 W 9th St, Russellville, KY
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gloria Young Hovious Scholarship Fund at Western Kentucky University.
