Gary Jude Browning, 62, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was diagnosed with cancer in January and experienced one complication after another. Despite a strong desire to live, he surrendered to the disease on April 2, 2024, at The Medical Center, Bowling Green, Kentucky, surrounded by his family.

Born July 11, 1961, to James Samuel Browning and Cynthia Hayden Browning, in Lebanon, Kentucky, he was the youngest of five children. Raised on a dairy farm on Sam Browning Road, Gary spent his summers working in tobacco and roaming the farm. After graduating from Marion County High School, Gary moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky, continuing the Browning tradition of attending Western Kentucky University. After student teaching in history at Warren Central High School, he entered a career in sales and eventually owned his own business, Advanced Office Machines. Gary was the Browning family historian as he knew all the dates, could remember the genealogy, and always knew the whole story. An avid sports fan, Gary worked stat row for many years and only missed a handful of WKU home basketball games since arriving on campus in 1979. Truly a fan, his wardrobe consisted of so much WKU apparel that people presumed he worked there. He could remember sports stats like no other. Gary was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He attended and served on many TEC and Koinonia teams across the diocese and beyond, and was instrumental in the retreats beginning at HSCC. On Sundays, Gary often served as an usher, and, just like his father, had a deep devotion to the rosary. He enjoyed daily mass on his lunch break on Fridays and would often attend funerals of fellow parishioners. Gary loved to arrive 30 minutes to an hour early and stay 30 minutes late at ballgames and at church to be fully present and to socialize. Almost everywhere he went, he would see someone he knew from some facet of his life. Gary had a fondness for going in circles and was a proponent of the roundabouts.

Preceded in death by his father James Samuel Browning, brother-in-law Bill Burke, and nephew Daniel Robinson, Gary is survived by his wife Christy Buford Browning, son Garret James Browning, daughters Riley Nicole Medlock of Owensboro and Carly Ann Medlock of Kitty Hawk, NC, and fur baby Topper. His mother Cynthia Hayden Browning of Lebanon survives him as well as his siblings: Sam (Ellen Zuerndorfer) of Palm Harbor, FL; Peggy Burke of Lebanon; Rita Browning of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; and Annette (Lee) Robinson of Lebanon. Gary is also survived by his in-laws Bill and Sally Buford of Owensboro, John Buford (Carl Curnutte) of Manteo, NC, BJ (Haley) Buford of Owensboro, and Jesse (Leigh) Buford of Shepherdsville. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews will miss his crazy handshake, quirky sayings, and goofy antics.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Friday, April 5 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with entombment to follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, April 4 at Johnson Vaughn Phelps Funeral Home with Vigil Prayers and a Rosary Service at 7:00 pm. There will be additional visitation from 9:00 am to 10:00 am on Friday, April 5 at the church.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Holy Spirit Catholic Church for debt retirement.

Pallbearers will be his nephews Brandon, Clayton, and Karl Robinson and Jaffe Browning and great nephews Jackson Benningfield, Noah George, and Brady Benningfield.
