Deborah Jane Spooner Murray, 66 of Portland, TN, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2020 at the Sumner Regional Medical Center.

The Nashville, TN native was a daughter of the late Robert Michael Spooner and Nellie J. Epley Spooner of Hendersonville, TN, who survives. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael W. Spooner and Robert Andrew Spooner and a nephew, Brandon W. Green.

She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Phoenix and master's degree from Cumberland University, both in education. She worked several years in the Church Music Department for the Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville and worked in the Special Education Department in Gallatin High School and Portland High School. After her retirement she worked as a substitute teacher in the Sumner County, TN area. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her mother she is survived by her son, Thomas Christopher Murray (Jessica) and former husband, James Murray; one sister, Patricia Ann Green (Daniel); one uncle, John Epley (Jackie); three nephews, Michael W. Spooner, II, Robert M. Spooner (Jessica) and Cameron Green; two nieces, Brandy Hannah (Dustin) and Autumn Crouch (Darrell); three great nephews and two great nieces.

Graveside services are scheduled for 3:00 pm, Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Goodlettsville, TN. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation. Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
