Dr. Carlisle B. Barnes Jr., 91, of Alvaton died on Friday, September 8, 2017 at The Medical Center. The Brewers, KY native was born on May 17, 1926 to the late Carlisle Brown and Onie Mildred Dunn Barnes. He was also preceded in death by an infant brother.

He retired as a physicist/mathematician who specialized in thermodynamics. He was a graduate of College High, WKU, and Vanderbilt University, where he attained his Bachelors Degree. He received his Masters Degree from UK, and then his PhD from The Ohio State University. He was a US army veteran, having reached the rank of technician fourth grade, draftsman topographic instructor. While in the army he received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Ribbon. Dr. Barnes Jr. was involved in WKU Friends of the Library, WKU Alumni Association as a life member, Lockheed Employee Recreational Association (LERA), BGAMUG (BGA-Bytes Editor), and the Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System Design Team. He was a NASA short course instructor for Vacuum Technology, Leak Detection, and System Maintenance. He was also a manager in research and development, including cryosurgery probes and cryogenic viewports. He was a member of State Street United Methodist Church.

He loved spending time reading, watching UK basketball, and being on his computer. He loved Turkish coffee, iced tea, cornbread, sugar cookies and Christmas.

Dr. Barnes Jr. is survived by his wife, Alice L. Barnes of Alvaton; four children, James Carlisle Barnes of Wöllstein, Germany, Barrett Lee Barnes of Bowling Green, Craig Stuart Barnes (Karen) of South Charleston, WV, and Caroline Barnes Weygandt (Bill) of Galena, OH; two grandchildren, Ilona Barnes of Wöllstein, Germany and Adrianna Weygandt of Galena, OH; and two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Max Dorn, both of Wöllstein, Germany.

A Graveside Service is scheduled for Monday, September 11, 2017 at 11:00 am at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 9:00 am – 11:00 am at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home.
