J ohnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home, has been serving this community for 60 years. In 1953 Mr. and Mrs. Johnson left their partnership with T. W. Crow and Son Funeral Home in Scottsville, KY to come to Bowling Green where the process of ownership in the Sbatterfield, Eakin and Dawson Funeral home began. The first year here the funeral home, located on College Street, went by the
name of Eakin and Johnson. In June of 1954 the Johnsons became sole proprietors of Johnson Funeral Home. The funeral home continued at the College Street location until October of 1962 when Johnson Funeral Home was moved to a new location at 901 Fairview Avenue.
Mr. Johnson passed away in 1992 and Mrs. Johnson passed away in 2007. They are both greatly missed, although their direction and values are still maintained to this day.
Ownership of the funeral home has very appropriately passed into the hands of Gene and Evelyn Vaughn & John and Charlotte Phelps. Both Gene and John worked with the Johnson's early in their careers in funeral service. In 2011, the ownership of the funeral home was aquired by John and Charlotte Phelps, with Gene and Evelyn still being very involved as stockholders.
We believe our past is a link to our future. At Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home we honor the time tested traditions instilled in us by our founders. Mrs. Elaine Johnson was once asked by an employee to tell about the most important funeral the funeral home had ever serviced. Her comment was, "The most important funeral you will ever have is the funeral you are having for today."
